Introduction to Digital Humanities - for Research Postgraduates

This seminar will introduce the principles of Digital Humanities (DH) including digital content, digital tools and methods, and the transformative impact of DH practices within the research life cycle of the humanities. We will delve into the historical context of DH, examining its evolution and emergence as a critical interdisciplinary field. The seminar will also elucidate the foundational principles that underpin the utilization of digital approaches across various facets, enabling scholars to conduct “traditional research” more effectively and efficiently, fostering deeper engagement with sources, and inspiring the formulation of innovative research inquiries. Additionally, we will explore the challenges and ethical considerations that arise in the digital realm, encouraging participants to critically evaluate the theoretical implications of employing digital approaches and the profound impact of the digital on the arts and humanities. The session will also offer a glimpse into several inspiring DH projects at the University of Reading, providing concrete examples of how these principles are applied in practice, and demonstrating the potential for innovative research and exploration in the DH. The seminar will conclude with an information session on DH services and support available at Reading.
